Budapest – Southern Transdanubia

South-West Hungary is known among others for its tasty wines. Pécs, the capital of the region is one of the European Capitals of Culture in 2010. The main attractions are - Pécs (pre-Christian necropolis – a world heritage site, cathedral, Csontváry, Amerigo Tot and Zsolnay museums) – Villány (lovely village of wine-cellars and delicious red wines) – Siklós (fortress) – Szigetvár (fortress) – the region of Ormánság, tiny village chapels with painted wooden interior like the one in Drávaiványi, – Kaposvár (County Hall, gothic ruins of Szentjakab, baroque pharmacy, Rippl-Rónai Museum) – Ozora (renaissance castle).

Budapest – Western Transdanubia

Main attractions: Zalaegerszeg (Göcsej Museum, Open-air Ethnographic Museum, baroque parish church) – Nagykanizsa (Thury Museum, parish church) – the region of Őrség with roman/gothic village chapels (Őriszentpéter, Velemér) and the village museum of Szalafő Szombathely (ruins of the Roman town, Savaria Museum, downtown) – Kőszeg (14-17th century city centre, 13th century fortress) – Pápa (cathedral, 18 century Esterházy palace) – Sümeg (13th century fortress, baroque Parish church decorated by Maulbertsch) – Sárvár (13-17th century renaissance Nádasdy castle, City church, spa)

Budapest – Northern Hungary

Northern Hungary is the land of the famous Tokaji Wine and a very special place with World Heritage sites and National Parks. You must see: Eger (medieval castle, beautiful baroque downtown, basilica, baroque Franciscan church, Archbishop’s palace and baroque library, 17th century Turkish minaret) – Hollókő (traditional village part of UNESCO World Heritage) – Miskolc (gothic church of Avas, 19th century downtown, 13th century castle, the beautiful Hámori lake and Palota Hotel at Lillafüred) – Tokaj (centre of the world famous wine region, historic downtown with wine cellars) – Sárospatak (gothic-renaissance castle, gothic Calvinist church) – Nyíregyháza (Liberty-style and eclectic downtown, open-air village museum)

For gourmands we can extend the tour to the Upper-Tisza region, the land that ‘God created in high spirits’ with exquisite treasures to see: Túristvándi (18th century watermill), Nyírbátor (14th century gothic church), Szatmárcseke (cemetery with wooden headstones in form of a boat) Calvinist churches of medieval origin, painted wooden inner decoration and characteristic wooden belfry (Tákos, Csaroda, Nyírmihálydi, Vámosatya, etc), medieval and renaissance castles (Pácin, Vaja).

  • Budapest / Danube Bend: ESZTERGOM (catholic capital of Hungary with the largest basilica and the Christian Museum) – VISEGRÁD (the ruins of the 13th century fortress and the 15th century renaissance palace of king Matthias) – SZENTENDRE (lovely ‘artists town’, Open air village museum and the Margit Kovács Ceramics Museum)
  • Budapest / the Puszta: a very characteristic region of eastern Hungary with specific fauna and flora. For those who whish to experience the Hungarian ‘derring-do’ there are places offering traditional meal and programme in a highly professional way but not cliché. As the horse has always been the companion of Magyars, there are different horse programmes from 10th century warriors and the hussars to the ‘csikós’ (19th century cowboys of the puszta) and the racehorses and trotters of these days.
